On May 23, 1915 he was recalled to the military service with the rank of health sergeant and the next day he presented himself at the collection center of Sant 'Ambrogio in Milan from where he was to be sent to Bergamo.
Until 1918 he served as a chaplain of the Reserve Hospital in Bergamo called Ricovero nuovo and others located elsewhere. With his kindness and his optimism he was able to comfort the soldiers and reconcile them to the faith.
